Livestock Investment Opportunities
Sudan has one of the largest and most species-diverse livestock populations in Africa (FAO 1997). In addition to the huge livestock base, the country has great wealth in wildlife, fish and poultry.
The Country's Comparative Advantages in Livestock Production and Trade articulate on:
· Large potential for both live and slaughter export.
· Large feed resources of natural origin crop residues and agro-industries by-products.
· Well-adapted animal species and diversified breeds.
· Adequate disease control and quarantine measures.
· Modern, improved and well-equipped abattoirs.
· Growing and improved transport facilities.
· Range comprising 51 percent of the country's area
Hundreds of thousand tons of fish inventories are available in fresh and marine waters. Investment in livestock involves direct operation in dairy, meat and egg production. Appreciable opportunities remain in the integration of such operations. Transfer of appropriate technology or the modernization of livestock farming systems have good potential. Establishment of funding or credit as well as insurance institutions is an area for investment.
Sudan's national strategy aims at increasing the livestock population by three fold through promotion of the conventional methods employed by traditional herd owners to more modernized and developed techniques. The strategy also aims at boosting animal and livestock product exports by twenty times. It also targets the complete eradication of endemic and epidemic cattle diseases, realization of self-sufficiency in vaccines and basic drugs and promotion of veterinary services and research.
Moreover, the strategy's objective is to promote the fisheries sector by establishing and modernizing fish canning and drying industries through provision of appropriate technology to ensure full utilization of this important resource.
